Advancing sustainable and cost-effective AEM electrolysis

At European Hydrogen Week 2026 in Brussels, the HYScale team presented the latest progress towards developing a sustainable, cost-effective anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology for green hydrogen production.

During his presentation, Julien Fage (CENmat) highlighted several important project achievements, demonstrating progress from material development and laboratory testing towards larger-scale applications.

The project has successfully scaled up its critical raw material-free (CRM-free) catalysts and electrodes, with performance validated in single cells and a 6 kW short stack. Production of the coated catalyst substrate has also been developed to support scaling up to 100 kW.

Another key achievement is the PFAS-free AionFLX™ membrane, successfully scaled up to 900 cm². Its performance has been validated in single-cell testing and a 6 kW short stack, with consistent performance maintained following scale-up. The membrane and ionomer are produced using the same polymer, helping to reduce production costs.

Our team has also finalised its 100 kW stack design, focusing on performance, durability and manufacturability at scale. The selected porous transport layer (PTL) configuration and coated catalyst substrate materials and designs have been finalised, and prototype components have been prepared.

Moving towards the 100 kW demonstrator

With the stack design finalised and production ongoing, HYScale is progressing towards integrating its developed materials and components into a full-scale demonstrator. Our target is operating conditions of 2 A/cm² at 2 V and aims to validate the technology in an industrially relevant environment. The next steps include completing production of the 100-kW stack, preparing it for shipment to the demonstration site in Greece, and monitoring the efficiency of the integrated demonstrator system. These activities will help assess the technology’s potential for further scale-up towards megawatt-level hydrogen production.

Our team at European Hydrogen Week

Our team was present at European Hydrogen Week 2026, alongside colleagues from CENmat, the University of Ljubljana and META Group. The event provided an opportunity to share progress, exchange ideas and connect with the wider hydrogen community. During the event, we recorded interviews with members of our team to capture their insights and perspectives on HYScale and the development of sustainable hydrogen technologies.

Stay connected! We’ll share these interviews and more updates from the event soon.
