Iridium is one of the most expensive and scarce materials used in proton exchange membrane water electrolysers (PEMWEs). Finding ways to reduce the amount required is therefore essential for making hydrogen production more affordable.
In this publication, HYScale researchers developed a new catalyst design that makes more efficient use of iridium. The catalyst layer gradually organises itself during operation, creating a structure that remains stable while using significantly less iridium than conventional systems. Despite the reduced amount of catalyst, the electrolyser operated for around 2,000 hours without significant performance loss.
The results show that reducing the use of critical raw materials does not necessarily mean compromising durability, offering a promising route for future PEM electrolyser development.
